15 September 2026: Overnight retreat erases the late crypto advance
Bitcoin slips to $77,600 and Ether falls below $2,500 as Monday's late crypto advance unwinds. Sentiment rises to 69 despite the overnight retreat.
Monday evening’s crypto advance has unwound overnight, with Ether back below $2,500 and Bitcoin below $78,000. XRP still shows a daily gain, but it too has retreated from last night’s observation. The new morning complication is sentiment: a sharply higher daily reading arrives just as the latest prices show the previous session’s improvement fading.
The broader market valuation has returned to roughly Monday afternoon’s level. At around 07:14 BST on 15 September, CoinGecko’s global snapshot puts market capitalisation, the estimated value of circulating cryptocurrencies, near $2.66 trillion, or £1.97 trillion. Bitcoin dominance, its share of that total, is around 58.4%, compared with approximately 58.5% in the evening report.
Alternative.me’s Fear and Greed Index, a daily Bitcoin sentiment measure using inputs including volatility and momentum, has risen to 69 from 57. Both scores remain in the provider’s Greed category. That is a substantial change in the score, but it is neither a live price reading nor a forecast of what happens next.
| Timeframe | Regime | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | Neutral | Price up about 0.09% over this period. |
| 4 hours | Neutral | Price down about 0.37% over this period. |
| Daily | Neutral | Price up about 0.05% over this period. |
| Weekly | Bearish | Price down about 1.20% over this period. |
| Monthly | Bullish | Price up about 23.19% over this period. |

The table describes Bitcoin’s observed price changes using CoinGecko chart samples. Moves smaller than 0.5% either way are labelled Neutral, larger gains Bullish and equivalent falls Bearish. Weekly and monthly mean approximately seven and 30 days, with comparisons taken from the nearest available hourly samples. These are descriptions of past movement, not trading signals.
Bitcoin is around $77,600, or £57,600, down approximately 0.2% over 24 hours. Its underlying quote of $77,627 is about 1.9% below the $79,122 recorded in Monday evening’s report on the broader advance. The small daily loss therefore understates the retreat from the later observation.
Bitcoin is also slightly below Monday morning’s $77,739 and almost back to the afternoon’s $77,644. The late move above $79,000 has not been retained. That gives the morning a different meaning from a routine pause near the evening price: most of the intervening improvement has been reversed.
The distinction depends on where the comparison begins. A rolling daily return looks back a full 24 hours, while the overnight comparison starts at last night’s report. Neither cancels the other. Bitcoin’s near flat daily reading describes the endpoints of a day that contained a larger rise and retreat, rather than showing that little happened throughout it.
Ether is near $2,497, or £1,853, down around 1.1% over 24 hours. Ether, the coin used on Ethereum, is approximately 1.8% below the evening’s rounded $2,542. It has surrendered the margin above $2,500 that widened late on Monday and is below the morning’s roughly $2,522 as well.
This is the clearest change in the recovery story among the three coins that joined XRP’s evening advance. Ether had regained both a round number and its earlier morning observation. It has now lost both at this snapshot. The $2,500 comparison is useful because it identifies what changed; it does not make that number a guaranteed floor or a prediction.
Monday morning’s account of the recovery beyond Sunday’s prices provides the earlier reference. Ether’s return to that observation proved temporary. For readers following the sequence, the useful conclusion is that yesterday’s recovery needs reassessing against current prices, even if an older headline still describes it accurately for its publication time.
Solana is around $101.39, or £75.24, down approximately 0.4% over 24 hours. That is roughly 1.8% below the evening’s $103.20 and slightly below Monday morning’s $101.64. It remains above the afternoon’s $101.17, so the late advance has mostly unwound without exactly retracing every earlier observation.
Solana reinforces the shared direction visible in Bitcoin and Ether. All three are lower than last night, despite different daily percentages and different distances from Monday’s starting references. This establishes a broad retreat within this small group. It does not identify the news, orders or investor motives responsible, and the price evidence alone cannot supply that missing explanation.
XRP is near $1.41, up approximately 1.5% over 24 hours, while also below last night’s $1.46. Its daily percentage is still the strongest of the four coins followed here. Current prices and daily changes come from CoinGecko’s dollar and sterling quotes. The evening prices rounded to cents do not justify a finely measured overnight return.
XRP retains more of Monday’s progress than the other three on the morning comparison: yesterday’s morning quote was around $1.38. But describing it simply as rising would miss its overnight decline. The positive daily number and lower evening comparison can both be true. Its remaining daily strength makes it a relative exception, rather than evidence that the wider retreat has stopped.
The important divergence is now higher measured sentiment alongside lower overnight prices. Yesterday morning the relationship ran the other way, with recovery accompanied by a falling sentiment score. Today’s reversal shows why the index needs its own timestamp. It combines several inputs on a daily schedule, while market quotes keep changing between updates.
A Greed label should therefore not replace the actual price sequence. The rise from 57 to 69 indicates more optimism in the provider’s composite measure, not proof that buyers are supporting every coin at its evening price. It also cannot establish why prices fell. Keeping those claims separate prevents a sentiment indicator from becoming an explanation it cannot substantiate.
The wider valuation offers another perspective: approximately $2.66 trillion now compares with $2.71 trillion last night. Coverage and update times differ across snapshots, so those rounded totals give direction rather than a precise cash flow calculation. A lower market value does not mean an equivalent sum was withdrawn; changing quoted prices alter the estimated value of circulating coins.
What to watch through Tuesday is whether the lost evening ground begins to return. For Bitcoin, $77,739 marks Monday morning’s observation, before considering the much higher $79,122 evening quote. For Ether, distinguish merely moving above $2,500 from regaining roughly $2,522. Those would represent different amounts of repair.
For Solana, compare the next observation with $101.64 and then $103.20. Finally, check whether XRP retains its advantage over Monday morning’s $1.38 while the other coins recover or continue retreating. These comparisons describe what subsequent prices would change in the story. They are a way to follow the evidence, without treating a daily percentage or sentiment label as a decision to invest.
