5 September 2026 PM: ETF review proposals meet a quiet crypto market

Crypto firms seek faster ETF reviews as Bitcoin steadies below $80,000. Solana edges higher, while sentiment stays in Greed this Saturday afternoon.

Crypto firms are pressing for a quicker route from fund proposal to market, while Bitcoin spends Saturday afternoon just below $80,000. The contrast matters: changing how investment products are reviewed could shape future access to crypto, but an industry request is not an approval or fresh buying. On 5 September 2026, prices offer a modest stabilisation story, with Solana showing more movement than Bitcoin.

The afternoon snapshot is steadier than this morning’s, but the improvement is small. At about 14:03 BST, CoinGecko’s market data put total crypto capitalisation, the estimated value of circulating coins, at roughly $2.71 trillion. Bitcoin dominance, its share of that total, was about 58.9%. The overall market value remained down around 1.9% over the preceding 24 hours, so small gains in several large coins should not be mistaken for a recovery across everything.

Alternative.me’s Fear and Greed Index, a measure of Bitcoin sentiment assembled from market and attention signals, remains at 73 out of 100, classified as Greed. That is the same daily reading used this morning, rather than a new afternoon survey. It describes the mood and is not a forecast.

The table describes observed Bitcoin price changes. Neutral means a move smaller than 0.5% either way; Bullish and Bearish label larger rises and falls. These simple thresholds describe past movement, not a recommendation.

Timeframe Regime What it means
1 hour Neutral Price up about 0.20% over this period.
4 hours Neutral Price up about 0.08% over this period.
Daily Neutral Price up about 0.25% over this period.
Weekly Bullish Price up about 2.80% over this period.
Monthly Bullish Price up about 23.50% over this period.

Bitcoin is around $79,700, up about 0.25% over 24 hours and only slightly above its morning level. CoinGecko’s latest quote is roughly 0.1% above the rounded $79,600 reported in this morning’s briefing on sentiment and the pullback. That is a much smaller change than a casual comparison between a negative morning percentage and a positive afternoon percentage might suggest.

The reason is the moving comparison window. A 24 hour return compares today’s quote with the price exactly one day earlier. As time passes, the starting price changes too. The displayed return can therefore improve sharply even when the latest price barely moves. Comparing the actual morning and afternoon quotes gives a clearer answer to the question of what has changed since breakfast.

Bitcoin’s four hour move is also small, around 0.08% in CoinGecko’s chart series. Its weekly and monthly gains are considerably larger, at about 2.8% and 23.5%. Those periods tell different parts of the story: a strong month can contain an unsettled day and a quiet afternoon. The useful conclusion is that Bitcoin has stabilised near its morning price, without yet reclaiming $80,000.

Solana is near $103, up around 1.5% over 24 hours, giving this afternoon’s comparison a little more substance. Against the approximately $102 recorded this morning, the current $103.19 quote represents an increase of roughly 1.2%. That is a clearer intraday improvement than Bitcoin’s, although the comparison uses a rounded morning figure and should not be read to two decimal places.

Solana is still down about 0.3% over a week, despite gaining roughly 40.5% over a month in the same provider’s figures. Calling it simply strong or weak would lose that distinction. Today’s advance does not establish a specific network catalyst, and the market snapshot cannot identify the motives of buyers. It shows a more noticeable afternoon rise within an uneven recent path.

Ethereum is around $2,460, up approximately 0.26% over 24 hours. That compares with about $2,450 this morning, an increase of roughly 0.4%. Ethereum is moving in the same direction as Bitcoin in this snapshot, but neither has produced a large intraday rebound.

Its participation is useful because confidence extending beyond Bitcoin would give a broader picture than Bitcoin moving alone. The evidence currently supports a narrower description: two major assets have edged upwards. It does not demonstrate that fresh institutional money has arrived or that the wider retreat is over. Those claims would need separate evidence on investment flows and a longer observation period.

XRP is around $1.41, almost unchanged over 24 hours, with a gain of roughly 0.06%. Its price is slightly above this morning’s rounded $1.40 quote. That small difference offers some evidence of steadier conditions, but the precision of the comparison is limited by the rounded starting value.

Comparing percentage changes is more useful than comparing token prices. A $1.41 token is not automatically cheaper in valuation terms than a $103 token because their supplies differ. Cristoniq’s guide to checking token supply and circulating value explains that distinction. For this afternoon, XRP adds a broadly flat reading to a market where Solana is doing more of the moving.

The ETF review debate is a proposal about process, not a new investment approval. An exchange traded fund, or ETF, is an investment vehicle whose shares trade on an exchange. The Block reported on 4 September that Grayscale and 21Shares want optional confidential draft submissions, while Grayscale seeks a 45 day staff response commitment. A16z also argued for shorter reviews without reducing scrutiny.

The same report described objections: Jane Street warned about rushed launches, while Charles Schwab opposed a fully confidential process. These are competing submissions to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the securities regulator. The report said the SEC had set no timetable for further action. The practical distinction is between firms asking for procedural changes and a regulator adopting them; neither a request nor a faster review guarantees investor demand.

The evening checks are Bitcoin at $80,000, Ethereum near $2,500 and whether Solana keeps its relative improvement. Bitcoin crossing the round number would show a recovery above the level it remains below now. Ethereum approaching $2,500 alongside it would show more participation than a Bitcoin move alone. These are reference points, not predicted destinations or guaranteed barriers.

For the fund story, watch for an actual SEC response specifying what changes, which products it covers and when it applies. Until that exists, avoid treating proposals as completed reforms. The afternoon’s useful takeaway is modest: prices have found steadier footing, Solana has moved further, and the debate about future fund access remains separate from evidence of buying today.
