16 September 2026 PM: Ether holds near $2,400 as the afternoon pause continues
Ether holds near $2,400 as Bitcoin edges lower and XRP stays weak. The crypto afternoon pause continues ahead of the Federal Reserve's September decision.
Ether is still hovering around $2,400 this afternoon, while Bitcoin has edged lower and Solana has recovered a little of its morning loss. The pause in the two largest cryptocurrencies has largely survived the working day so far, but XRP remains under heavier pressure. Ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September decision, the market has offered little evidence of a broad recovery, even though the pace of the retreat looks quieter in today’s observations.
The afternoon picture is one of limited price changes within a weak daily market. In the snapshot retrieved at approximately 14:04 BST on 16 September, CoinGecko’s global data values circulating cryptocurrencies at around $2.60 trillion, or £1.93 trillion, down 4.2% over 24 hours. Bitcoin dominance, its share of that combined valuation, stands at 58.5%. The rounded totals are close to this morning’s, despite the negative daily comparison.
Alternative.me’s Fear and Greed Index, a daily indicator of Bitcoin market sentiment, remains at 51, labelled Neutral. That is the same reading used this morning, following yesterday’s 69 in Greed territory. It describes sentiment rather than forecasting prices, and an unchanged daily score does not mean that trading has stopped or that every coin is stable.
| Timeframe | Regime | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | Neutral | Price down about 0.48% over this period. |
| 4 hours | Neutral | Price up about 0.21% over this period. |
| Daily | Bearish | Price down about 1.43% over this period. |
| Weekly | Bearish | Price down about 4.72% over this period. |
| Monthly | Bullish | Price up about 19.42% over this period. |

The table compares CoinGecko’s sampled Bitcoin prices across approximate periods. Gains of at least 0.5% are labelled Bullish, falls of at least 0.5% Bearish, and smaller changes Neutral. Weekly and monthly refer to seven and 30 days. These are descriptions of past returns, not predictions, and hourly samples can differ slightly from the latest live quote.
Bitcoin is around $75,792, or £56,320, down 1.5% over 24 hours. Against the $75,958 recorded in this morning’s report on neutral sentiment and pausing prices, it has slipped about 0.2%. That is a modest extension of weakness rather than a fresh plunge, but it also leaves the price below the nearby $76,000 round number.
The daily loss has narrowed from this morning’s roughly 2.1%, even though the actual dollar price is lower. A rolling daily percentage compares the present with a starting point that keeps changing. Comparing two dated prices answers the simpler afternoon question: has Bitcoin gained ground since breakfast? In this snapshot, it has not.
That distinction matters when a market screen begins to look less negative. A smaller red percentage can reflect an older, higher reference price dropping out of the comparison. The useful conclusion here is limited: Bitcoin’s recent losses have slowed between observations, but the morning level has not been recovered.
For UK readers, Bitcoin’s daily fall is about 1.4% in pounds, slightly smaller than its dollar decline. Currency movements affect the value shown in a sterling account. Neither currency view is inherently the correct one for everyone; the relevant comparison depends on the currency in which someone measures their holdings and spending.
Ether is near $2,402, or £1,785, down 3.2% over 24 hours and almost unchanged since morning. Ether, the coin used on Ethereum, was around $2,404 in the earlier report. That tiny difference supports the afternoon holding pattern more clearly than a claim that buyers have returned with conviction.
It also keeps $2,400 in view as a convenient reference point. Crossing a round number briefly would say little by itself. A later observation meaningfully above today’s morning price would provide clearer evidence of improvement, particularly if Bitcoin and other large coins were recovering at the same time.
Ether’s role in this update is therefore straightforward: it shows that stability in the largest coins has persisted beyond the morning check. Stability after a decline can be worth noting without promoting it into a forecast of what comes next.
Solana is around $97.31, down 3.7% over 24 hours but slightly above the morning’s $97.11. Its roughly 0.2% intraday gain contrasts with Bitcoin’s small decline. The difference is too slight to establish a strong new trend, but it shows that today’s four tracked coins are not moving in lockstep.
Solana remains below $100, which it had already lost during Tuesday’s retreat. A few cents of improvement do not erase that earlier move. The practical reading is a partial pause in the selling, with a small afternoon recovery that has yet to restore the previous price level.
XRP remains the weakest of this group, near $1.28 and down 10.4% over 24 hours. The morning quote was approximately $1.29. Rounded cent prices limit the precision of any intraday calculation, but both observations place it below Tuesday evening’s roughly $1.30.
Unlike Bitcoin and Ether, XRP’s daily loss has widened since the morning report. The quote alone does not identify the cause. All four current prices and daily returns come from CoinGecko’s price feed; they establish relative weakness without proving which news item or group of traders produced it.
The important afternoon theme is how unevenly the market is absorbing Tuesday’s retreat. Tuesday evening’s account of spreading losses provides the earlier context. Today’s largest coins have largely stopped extending those losses between snapshots, while XRP still looks markedly weaker on the daily measure.
A broad recovery would require more than one improving percentage or one coin edging higher. Looking for several prices to regain earlier observations helps separate a market-wide improvement from isolated movement. It also avoids treating a sentiment label as a substitute for what prices have actually done.
What to watch into the evening begins with the Federal Reserve’s decision and economic projections. The US central bank’s official calendar places its meeting on 15 to 16 September and marks it as including projections. The decision concerns interest rates, while the projections provide officials’ economic outlook. This is scheduled context, not evidence that the meeting caused today’s moves.
For the next price comparison, use Bitcoin’s $76,000 and morning $75,958, Ether’s $2,400, and Solana’s $100. XRP’s earlier $1.30 is another useful reference. Recovering those observations would show progress of differing sizes; remaining below them would leave more of the earlier weakness intact. The evening update should judge the actual response across several coins, rather than assuming that a particular announcement must produce a particular direction.
