7 September 2026 PM: Ether turns positive as Bitcoin stays below $80,000
Ether turns positive over 24 hours as Bitcoin stays below $80,000. The afternoon crypto update separates daily returns from changes since morning.
Ether has edged into positive territory over 24 hours while Bitcoin remains below $80,000 this Monday afternoon. The change gives crypto a slightly different daily scorecard from this morning, but it does not amount to a broad recovery. Bitcoin is a little lower than the morning quote, Solana is still down over the daily window, and the US share market holiday leaves one familiar comparison point absent. The useful story is how a small improvement in one measure can coexist with a subdued market.
The afternoon market snapshot remains uneven beneath a broadly steady total valuation. At around 14:02 BST on 7 September, CoinGecko’s global figures put crypto market capitalisation, the estimated value of circulating coins, at approximately $2.70 trillion. Bitcoin dominance, its share of that total, is about 59.1%. Those rounded figures are close to this morning’s $2.70 trillion and 59.2%, so neither establishes a substantial shift during the day.
Alternative.me’s Fear and Greed Index, a daily gauge of Bitcoin market sentiment using measures including volatility and momentum, remains at 71 in the provider’s Greed category. That is the same daily reading reported this morning, down from 73 yesterday. It describes sentiment rather than predicting prices, and it should not be mistaken for a fresh afternoon assessment.
| Timeframe | Regime | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | Neutral | Price up about 0.30% over this period. |
| 4 hours | Neutral | Price up about 0.20% over this period. |
| Daily | Neutral | Price down about 0.39% over this period. |
| Weekly | Bullish | Price up about 1.70% over this period. |
| Monthly | Bullish | Price up about 22.60% over this period. |

The table describes Bitcoin’s observed price changes across five periods. For this summary, changes smaller than 0.5% either way receive a Neutral label, with larger gains labelled Bullish and larger falls Bearish. These labels are descriptive, not forecasts. CoinGecko supplies the hourly, daily, seven day and 30 day comparisons; the four hour change is calculated from its recorded prices. A positive monthly figure and a slightly negative daily figure are compatible because they start at different points.
Bitcoin is near $79,600, around 0.4% lower over 24 hours, according to CoinGecko. That is also slightly below the rounded $79,800 quoted in this morning’s report on cooling sentiment. The difference is roughly $200, or about a quarter of one per cent. Given the rounded morning reference, greater precision would imply more accuracy than the comparison supports.
The shorter window tells a different part of the story. Bitcoin is up about 0.2% across the latest four hours and around 0.3% over the latest hour. Neither move is large, but both show why a negative daily percentage cannot be read as evidence that the price has fallen continuously. It can recover from an earlier point and still remain below where it stood yesterday.
Over seven days, Bitcoin is about 1.7% higher, while its 30 day gain is around 22.6%. The longer advance therefore remains visible alongside today’s small retreat. For readers following the market without trading every fluctuation, the practical distinction is between giving back a little ground and reversing an entire month’s movement. This snapshot establishes the former, without telling us what comes next.
Ether’s daily percentage has turned positive without a meaningful rise from the morning quote. CoinGecko puts Ether, the coin used on Ethereum, near $2,506, up about 0.3% over 24 hours. This morning’s report placed it around $2,510 with a small daily decline. The current dollar price is fractionally lower, even though the daily percentage is now positive.
That apparent contradiction comes from the moving comparison point. A rolling daily return compares the latest price with the price at the same time yesterday. As the clock advances, yesterday’s starting value changes too. A percentage can consequently improve without the asset becoming more expensive since the last article. It is a useful distinction whenever a market screen changes colour and the underlying price has barely moved.
Solana is near $105.71, down about 1% over 24 hours, although above the rounded $105 morning reference. XRP is around $1.41, roughly 0.4% lower over the daily window. Its rounded dollar quote is unchanged from the morning report, so a precise intraday return would be unwarranted. Together, these figures show different paths across the coins covered here, rather than evidence that the whole market has turned upwards.
Price alone also does not tell readers how large a cryptocurrency is. Circulating supply matters when comparing total valuations, as our guide to checking token supply and circulating value explains. A lower price per coin does not automatically mean an asset is cheaper in valuation terms. That distinction becomes especially useful when comparing Bitcoin with coins priced in single dollars. For UK readers, the dollar figures also leave out changes in sterling. A return measured in pounds depends on both the cryptocurrency price and the exchange rate, so it need not match the dollar percentage shown here.
The US holiday remains context for the afternoon, without establishing a cause for these moves. The New York Stock Exchange calendar confirms that Monday 7 September is a market holiday. Crypto continues trading, but the regular US share session cannot provide its usual same-day comparison. Tuesday 8 September brings that reference point back.
A calendar entry cannot tell us why individual investors bought or sold today. Nor do these price figures establish changes in institutional demand or the ease of executing a large order. Those explanations require their own evidence. The defensible afternoon account is narrower: Bitcoin has slipped slightly since morning, Ether’s daily comparison has improved, and the coins covered here have not moved together.
Watch the price comparisons, Tuesday’s US reopening and Friday’s inflation release. Bitcoin near $80,000 and Ether near $2,500 remain convenient reference points, not predicted destinations or guaranteed turning points. Compare their next quotes with this afternoon’s actual prices, alongside the rolling daily percentages. That will show whether any further improvement reflects higher prices or a changing starting point.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics calendar schedules August’s Consumer Price Index, which measures changes in consumer prices, for Friday 11 September at 08:30 US Eastern time, or 13:30 BST. Before then, Tuesday’s regular US session will restore a useful cross-market comparison. The next meaningful development will be evidence that prices have moved beyond today’s modest differences, or a verified event that explains a change in the market.
