12 September 2026 PM: Afternoon recovery widens as Ether regains ground
Ether recovers much of its overnight dip as Bitcoin and Solana edge higher. The UK crypto application window approaches, with sentiment steady at 63.
Ether has recovered much of its overnight dip, giving Saturday afternoon a firmer tone than the morning. Bitcoin is only slightly higher, while Solana edges further above $100. For UK readers, the approaching crypto authorisation window provides a separate date to watch, but it should not be mistaken for a new announcement explaining today’s prices.
The afternoon market is modestly stronger than this morning’s snapshot, with Ether making the clearest progress. At around 14:03 BST on 12 September, CoinGecko’s global data puts market capitalisation, the estimated value of circulating cryptocurrencies, near $2.66 trillion. Bitcoin dominance, its share of that total, is about 58.2%. Both remain close to the rounded figures in the morning report. Small advances in individual coins have not transformed the overall picture. Market capitalisation changes when existing coins are repriced; it is not a running total of fresh money entering crypto. Equally, a stable Bitcoin share does not mean every smaller asset is standing still. Ether and Solana can improve while the aggregate figures barely change at this level of rounding.
Alternative.me’s Fear and Greed Index, a daily measure of Bitcoin market sentiment, remains at 63 in the provider’s Greed category. That is the same daily observation used this morning, following yesterday’s 56. It is not a fresh afternoon increase. The index describes sentiment and does not predict whether the recovery will last.
| Timeframe | Regime | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | Neutral | Price down about 0.10% over this period. |
| 4 hours | Neutral | Price down about 0.04% over this period. |
| Daily | Bearish | Price down about 0.69% over this period. |
| Weekly | Bearish | Price down about 2.90% over this period. |
| Monthly | Bullish | Price up about 21.90% over this period. |

The table labels observed Bitcoin changes smaller than 0.5% either way as Neutral, larger gains as Bullish and equivalent falls as Bearish. It uses CoinGecko percentage data and nearby chart samples for the four hour comparison. Weekly and monthly mean rolling seven and 30 day periods. These are descriptions of past changes, not forecasts.
Bitcoin is around $77,300, or £57,150, down approximately 0.7% over 24 hours. That daily loss sits alongside a small increase from the roughly $77,200 recorded in this morning’s report on the overnight pause. At the precision used here, Bitcoin has made little progress through Saturday rather than suffered another substantial decline.
The distinction matters because a rolling daily return moves its starting point as time passes. A red daily percentage can coexist with a higher afternoon quote than the morning one. Keeping a fixed earlier observation makes it easier to see what has actually changed during this edition’s reporting window.
Friday afternoon’s roughly $77,850 remains above the current quote. The small Saturday improvement therefore has not repaired all of that subsequent retreat. Bitcoin’s role in today’s story is stabilisation, with a little ground regained since morning and a larger gap still visible against yesterday afternoon.
Ether is around $2,535, or £1,873, up approximately 1.2% over 24 hours and about 0.9% since the morning report. Ether, the coin used on Ethereum, has moved up from the morning’s rounded $2,511. It is now much closer to Friday evening’s roughly $2,545, recovering most of the overnight decline described earlier.
This is the most useful change for a returning reader. The daily percentage is smaller than this morning’s roughly 1.7%, even though the actual quote is higher. Those observations measure different intervals, so they are compatible. Describing the smaller daily percentage as proof of afternoon weakness would get the sequence backwards.
The price data establishes a recovery, but does not establish who bought or why. It offers no basis for claiming fresh institutional demand or a change in Ethereum’s network activity. The supported conclusion is narrower: Ether has regained much of the lost overnight ground while Bitcoin’s advance is comparatively small.
Solana is around $102.05, or £75.43, up roughly 0.7% over 24 hours. It is also about 0.5% above the morning’s $101.54. Unlike Ether, it had little overnight loss to recover, so today’s modest increase extends its position above $100 rather than reversing a conspicuous morning setback.
Solana therefore adds a second example of afternoon improvement. Its movement is smaller than Ether’s relative to the morning snapshot, but it helps establish that the change is not confined to one asset. The $100 comparison remains a convenient reference from Friday’s recovery, not a promised floor beneath the price.
XRP is near $1.37, up around 0.6% over 24 hours. The morning report rounded its quote to $1.36. That suggests a small improvement, although two decimal places are too coarse to calculate a precise intraday return. A one cent change in the displayed quote should not be dressed up as a decisive market event.
These figures come from CoinGecko’s live price snapshot. Together, the four coins show a modest afternoon advance led by Ether. They remain a limited sample of a much larger market. Friday’s evening account of the divided recovery provides the earlier comparison for how uneven that progress has been.
The approaching UK authorisation window is useful context, but its timetable predates today’s trading. The Financial Conduct Authority, the UK’s financial regulator, says its application period for the new cryptoasset regime runs from 30 September 2026 to 28 February 2027. The regime itself starts on 25 October 2027. These are different milestones: the period for applications comes before the rules take effect.
The FCA’s preparation page was published in April. Renewed attention to the approaching window does not make the timetable a new Saturday decision. For this market report, it belongs on the calendar rather than in an explanation of why Ether has risen. There is no evidence in the price snapshot linking today’s moves to that timetable.
What to watch into the evening is whether Ether completes the return towards Friday’s $2,545 observation. Compare the next quote with this afternoon’s roughly $2,535 and the morning’s $2,511. Those references will show whether the recovery has continued, paused or partly reversed without requiring a price prediction.
For Bitcoin, use $77,300 alongside Friday afternoon’s $77,850 to judge how much ground has been recovered. Then check whether Solana retains its move above $102. Separately, keep 30 September in view for the UK application window. Market progress and regulatory preparation can both matter without one being the cause of the other.
