6 September 2026 Evening: Late retreat trims crypto gains before Asia opens

Solana slipped from its afternoon level as Bitcoin held near $79,800, leaving crypto softer before the next Asian session and the US market holiday.

Solana has given back its afternoon advance as Sunday draws to a close, leaving Bitcoin near $79,800 and Ether just below $2,500. The change since our earlier update is a modest retreat across the four large coins tracked here, rather than a continuation of the afternoon’s split performance. The next Asian session inherits a recovery that has lost some ground, with the US market holiday still ahead.

The evening snapshot is softer than the afternoon, although the scale of the move remains small. At around 20:37 BST on 6 September, CoinGecko’s global market data put crypto capitalisation, the estimated value of circulating coins, at approximately $2.70 trillion. That compares with the rounded $2.71 trillion in our afternoon report. Bitcoin dominance, its share of the total, remains close to 59.2%.

The provider reports an aggregate market decline of about 3.4% over 24 hours, alongside near flat Bitcoin and positive daily returns in Ether and Solana. Those readings cover different baskets and are separate snapshots, so the four coins below should not be treated as a complete explanation of the aggregate change. Reported daily trading volume is around $66.4 billion, up approximately 11.3% against the preceding comparable period.

Alternative.me’s Fear and Greed Index, a Bitcoin sentiment gauge combining measures including volatility, momentum and social activity, is still 73, labelled Greed. This is the published daily reading, unchanged since yesterday, rather than a new evening assessment. It describes mood and does not predict returns.

The table summarises observed Bitcoin price changes. Moves smaller than 0.5% either way are Neutral; larger gains are Bullish and larger falls Bearish. These descriptive labels are not trading signals.

Timeframe Regime What it means
1 hour Neutral Price up about 0.20% over this period.
4 hours Neutral Price up about 0.24% over this period.

Bitcoin is around $79,810, almost unchanged over 24 hours but roughly 0.1% below the afternoon’s $79,920. CoinGecko’s Bitcoin data records a daily rise of only about 0.01%. Against that backdrop, calling this a strong evening selloff would overstate a very small move.

The reported daily range is approximately $79,400 to $80,100. Bitcoin remains inside it and below the $80,000 reference highlighted earlier. Its weekly gain is around 1.2%, while the monthly rise is about 23.5%, showing that this quiet evening sits within a much larger advance over a longer period.

Our afternoon report on Ether and Solana’s diverging paths provides the relevant comparison for returning readers. Bitcoin has moved down slightly since then, without establishing a new direction. Crypto trades continuously, so this closing update is a snapshot at the end of the British day, not an official exchange closing price.

Solana is near $105.62, up about 1.9% over 24 hours but down roughly 1.1% from the afternoon’s $106.83. That is the clearest reversal within today’s four coin comparison. Earlier, Solana had extended its morning progress while Ether slipped; by evening, it too has moved below its afternoon level.

It is also below the morning’s rounded $106.20. That distinction matters more than the still positive daily percentage when asking how Sunday developed. A rolling daily return compares with yesterday evening, whereas the morning and afternoon snapshots isolate different portions of today’s trading.

No verified announcement in this briefing explains that retreat, and the price change alone cannot identify who sold or why. The useful conclusion is narrower: the afternoon’s strongest performer has surrendered its extra progress, making the handover less convincing than the earlier snapshot suggested.

Ether is around $2,491, up approximately 0.6% over the rolling day and about 0.4% below the afternoon’s $2,500. Ether is the asset used on the Ethereum network. It has now edged lower across both comparisons within the British day, having been around $2,510 in the morning.

The provider’s daily range runs from roughly $2,473 to $2,521. The evening quote sits within that range, rather than representing a dramatic departure from it. Its movement broadly supports the same closing observation as Solana: the positive daily figure survives, while the gains made earlier in the day have softened. There is insufficient evidence here to turn that observation into a claim about network demand or institutional buying.

XRP is around $1.41, down approximately 0.4% over 24 hours, adding a negative daily reading to the group. That compares with about $1.42 this afternoon. Because those prices are rounded to cents, they are too coarse to support a precise percentage calculation between editions.

Its role in the evening picture is straightforward: not every large coin remains up over the rolling day. Together, the four assets show why a broad recovery headline needs checking against both the assets included and the period being measured.

The evening’s market activity offers a useful distinction between trading and fresh investment. The reported increase in daily volume means more transaction value in the provider’s comparison period. It does not mean an equivalent amount of new money entered crypto: the same coins can change hands more than once. Higher turnover can also accompany falling prices.

Tonight, higher reported activity sits alongside modest retreats since the afternoon. That combination supports a more measured reading than assuming greater volume confirms stronger demand. Nor does it establish whether large orders are easy to execute without moving prices, which is what market liquidity measures. Transaction totals and the depth of available orders answer different questions.

The calendar also matters for the next comparison. The NYSE holiday calendar confirms that its markets are closed on Monday, 7 September, for Labour Day. As noted earlier today, crypto continues trading, while those US listed exchange traded funds, whose units trade on stock exchanges, have no regular Monday session. That calendar fact is context for the handover, rather than a new explanation for tonight’s price changes.

What to watch next is whether the Asian session preserves tonight’s levels or extends the afternoon retreat. Start with Bitcoin around $79,800 and the observed daily low near $79,400. Trading below that low would extend the day’s range downwards; remaining above $80,000 would instead put it beyond the evening position. These are reference points, not predicted destinations.

Next, compare Solana with $105.60 and Ether with $2,500 to see whether the late softening persists or reverses. Finally, Tuesday, 8 September, brings the next regular US share market session after the holiday. Our Sunday morning briefing on the recovery before the holiday supplies the day’s starting point. For now, the evidence shows a modest loss of ground since afternoon, with daily gains in some coins still intact.
